Borage (Borago officinalis) is a fast-growing annual with vivid blue, star-shaped edible flowers and cucumber-flavoured leaves.
What it's used for
Borage flowers make an attractive garnish for drinks and salads. The young leaves have a mild cucumber flavour. Both the flowers and leaves are edible.
Grow your own at home
Borage is easy to grow, but it is best to avoid soil that is permanently wet or shaded. It self-seeds freely and is loved by bees and other pollinating insects.
It’s best sown from March to May.
The flowers and young leaves can be harvested throughout the summer.
