Pear

Ready to harvest

Pear (Pyrus) is a classic orchard tree, related to the apple. They can be used as ornamental trees thanks to their colourful spring blossom and gorgeous autumn hues, but are also grown for their sweet, juicy fruit.

  • Sow: October to April
  • Plant out: October to April
  • Harvest: August to October

What it's used for

Pears can be eaten fresh, poached, or baked. They can be made into pear cider, also known as a perry. The perry can also be distilled into a fruit brandy.

Grow your own at home

Pears grow well in the sun and, for most varieties, with a compatible pollinator nearby. Prune them to an open shape in winter for a good harvest the following summer.

For the best results, plant bare-root trees in the ground or a large pot in winter.

You can pick them in late summer or early autumn while still firm and slightly under-ripe and leave them to soften indoors.
