Mint

Ready to harvest

Mint (Mentha) is a vigorous, aromatic, and fragrant perennial herb. It can grow quickly and be quite invasive.

  • Sow: March to May
  • Plant out: March to May
  • Harvest: May to October

What it's used for

It works best in teas, salads, and sauces, especially when freshly picked. Mint is a classic pairing with new potatoes and peas. For the more adventurous among us, it can be used in ice creams, smoothies, and even cocktails!

Grow your own at home

Mint will thrive if planted near pools of water, lakes, or rivers. Grow it in a raised pot, or in a sunken container, to control its spread. Mint will grow in partial shade and will keep producing leaves if cut back regularly.

It’s best sown in plant divisions or plugs during the spring.

Leaves can be picked throughout its growing season, which is usually from spring right through to autumn.
