It starts at the market

Your experience begins in true Todmorden style: with a drink from the famous Market Coffee Bar. Meet your guides in the Indoor Market, take in the warmth and welcome of the stall holders, and step into one of Calderdale’s most cherished spaces before the walk begins. It’s a proper introduction to what this town is all about.

The Incredible Edible guided walk

From the market, the Incredible Edible team lead you on a tour around the growing sites that created a community. You’ll discover how a small group of locals turned unloved corners of public space into thriving edible landscapes — and sparked a worldwide network of communities doing the same. Hear how the project began, why Todmorden remains its flagship example, and how growing food in public places can change the way we live, shop, and connect with one another.

The walk is hands-on and sensory. You’ll pick and taste fresh herbs and edible plants straight from the beds, learn about their culinary and medicinal uses, and pick up practical tips to take home to your own garden or windowsill. Your guide — a local volunteer who knows every planted corner and every seasonal story — will share the stories behind the plants and the people who tend them.

A market feast to finish

After the walk, you’ll head back to the market for a relaxed lunch. Market traders provide a grazing box of food that shows off the very best of what’s on offer in the market. It’s a real celebration of the people and produce that make this market so special. Afterwards, take time to browse, chat with the traders, and maybe pick up something for tea.
