The Canal Towpath
The apricot tree, peach tree and herbs here were all planted by IET volunteers several years ago.
The Todmorden Green Route runs from the medical centre to here – this was a very early IET initiative.
It was a huge yet worthwhile project over a long time to clear the length of the towpath of rubble, rubbish and waste. Fruit trees, bushes and wildflowers were planted all the way from the horse tunnel to the Recovery Beds as part of what we now call ‘The Linear Larder’.
There was originally no seating anywhere near this area, and permission to install it was almost impossible to get. Yet, the vegetable-themed bench appeared here one day (!), and everyone loves it.

Access Information
Access to this area is step-free, but part of the area is cobbled and gravelled. Planting here is all at ground level and accessible from one side, with a number of tall plants and bushes. Access from the main road is via a narrow cobbled tunnel with a relatively steep downwards incline. Seating is available in this area if you need to take a break. Signage in this area is due to be replaced soon.
